By Eunice, Senior Optometrist, Malaya Optical
I am truly honored and delighted to share my experience joining the Menicon Japan Tour from
10–14 November 2025, a 5-day, 4-night professional journey that brought together optometry
experts from across Asia-Pacific. This meaningful trip allowed us to visit Menicon’s R&D
Centre, attend the Menicon Symposium and tour the Alpha Ortho-K lens manufacturing facility,
providing deep insights into the science, precision and commitment behind Menicon’s products.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Menicon Japan and Malaya Optical for this
invaluable opportunity.
Day 1: Arrival in Nagoya – A Warm Welcome
Upon landing in Nagoya, we received a warm welcome from the Menicon Japan team. Their
hospitality was exceptional and we were treated to a local lunch featuring Nagoya’s famous
Unagi rice, an authentic and memorable culinary experience.
The rest of the day was free and easy. I visited the iconic Nagoya Castle, immersing myself in
Japan’s rich history and culture. In the evening, we enjoyed a BBQ dinner, fostering meaningful
connections among industry peers and experts from Malaysia and Singapore in a relaxed and
friendly setting.

Day 2: Menicon R&D Centre & Menicon Symposium
The second day marked one of the most insightful experiences of the trip with our visit to the
Menicon R&D Centre. We had the privilege of meeting optometry experts from Australia,
Korea and India, making this a truly international exchange.
We were divided into small groups for a guided tour of the facility. I was genuinely impressed by
the cleanliness, organization and cozy working environment, reflecting Menicon’s strong
research culture and attention to detail.
One research topic that left a lasting impression on me was the cleaning efficacy and anti-
bacterial properties of contact lens care solutions for Ortho-K lenses. Through scanning electron
microscope (SEM) imaging, we were able to observe microorganism growth on lenses. This
visual evidence powerfully reinforced the importance of:
- Proper lens hygiene
- Using appropriate lens care solutions
- Educating patients on strict compliance and aftercare
Microbial growth can be far beyond what we imagine, making correct cleaning protocols critical
for patient safety.
Following the R&D visit, we then attended the Menicon Symposium at Menicon Headquarters. Several invited speakers shared practical insights and hands-on clinical experiences, bridging the gap between research and real-world application. The discussions were highly relevant and
beneficial for daily clinical practice.
In the evening, we enjoyed a Menicon bonding dinner at the hotel, featuring a delightful
Japanese buffet. It was a memorable highlight to meet Menicon CEO, Mr. Koji Kawaura, who
graciously mingled with everyone, sharing his vision and insights in a warm and approachable
manner.

Day 3: Alpha Corporation Factory Visit & Onsen Experience
On Day 3, we travelled to Nagano to visit the Alpha Corporation factory, where Alpha Ortho-K
lenses are produced. Experiencing their state-of-the-art production facility firsthand was truly
impressive.
We observed the sophisticated technology and highly systematic production processes, with staff meticulously adhering to strict protocols. Everyone wore full protective equipment to ensure the highest level of hygiene and quality control. For the same reason, we were required to do the same before entering the factory as well. This level of discipline and precision clearly demonstrated Menicon’s uncompromising commitment to product safety and consistency.
After the factory visit, we headed to our accommodation and enjoyed a traditional Japanese hot
spring (onsen). Which was my first onsen experience. Overall, it was both relaxing and culturally enriching. The day concluded with a Japanese-style banquet dinner, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious, offering a perfect balance between learning and cultural immersion.
Day 4: Cultural Exploration & Farewell to Nagoya
On the fourth day, we enjoyed a sightseeing tour together with all participants where we visited Magome, a historic town in the Kiso Valley renowned for its well-preserved Edo-period architecture. The experience was made even more special by the autumn season. Withs its breathtaking views of maple leaves, cool weather and a peaceful atmosphere. It was a beautiful moment to slow down, reflect and appreciate Japan’s heritage and natural beauty.
Lastly, we then returned to Nagoya to enjoy our final night. This marks the end of a truly enriching and unforgettable journey.

A Journey of Learning, Connection and Inspiration
This Menicon Japan tour was more than just a professional visit, it was a journey of learning, cultural appreciation and meaningful connection. From cutting-edge research and advanced
manufacturing to genuine hospitality and knowledge sharing, every experience reinforced my
confidence in Menicon’s commitment to excellence.
I am deeply grateful to Menicon Japan and Malaya Optical for supporting continuous professional development. In addition, the valuable lessons gained from this trip will enhance my clinical practice. In which will then support me in providing safer and more evidence-based care to my patients.
